Live HD video broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City are presented in the vast Auditorio Nacional here in Mexico City every year. If you're an opera fan who sneers at the idea of opera on the big screen, all I can say is that you've never been to one of these broadcasts. It is quite an experience, different from attending a live opera, and in some ways better. You get close-up views that would be impossible even from the $200 seats at the Met.
If you've never been to an opera but are curious, this is the perfect introduction. My recommendation would be to attend Verdi's 'La Traviata' on April 14--it's tuneful and has a good story. Here's a musical sample you will probably recognize.
But get tickets soon as the best seats are already sold out.
